We are delighted that you are considering a wedding at St Bartholomew's!

The best way to get information about weddings is to come to our annual wedding conference, which is normally held in the spring. Details of the wedding conference can be acquired by emailing the vicar, or coming to the Parish Office during opening hours. Nevertheless, information regarding weddings can be given all year round by contacting us, but here are some brief points below.

The Diocese of Newcastle say: 'A marriage service, wherever it is held, is a public declaration of love and commitment to your partner. If you choose to get married in a Church of England church, there is an added dimension - the assurance that God cares about your relationship and that his resources and strength are available to help you.'

Banns of Marriage need to be read out three times in Church at Sunday morning services. We recommend that couples attend services when banns are to be read.

Couples are allowed to choose music for before and after the service, as well as hymns, but do not have to. We have a recommended list of music for the bride's entrance and the end of the service, which we play through at the wedding conference. For further inquiries, you can email the vicar after the 10am Sunday service.

The church has an exceptional team of flower arrangers who make the church look beautiful all through the year, especially at Christmas and Easter. We do not mind if couples wish to use outside florists, but they are likely to be considerably more expensive and do not know the church as well. If there are two weddings on the same day, it is possible to share flowers.

Orders of Service

Orders of Service are not necessary to the service. We have a wedding card with the congregation's response in the ceremony printed. Some couples like Orders of Service to keep as a memento: if you are printing hymns, you need to coordinate this with us so that we are all literally 'singing off the same hymn-sheet'!

The church has a peal of eight hand bells which can be rung before and after the service. They are especially audible outside when the bride arrives at the porch and the couple leave the church.

The church can sit as many as 250. There will be a verger present to hand out hymn books and Orders of Service if you have them; however, we recommend, especially for larger weddings that you have one or two ushers to hand these out, seat guests and direct arriving people.

There are specific requirements for getting married in a Church of England church, which apply to St Bartholomew's:

  • one of you has ever lived in the parish for six months or more;
  • one of you has at any time regularly attended public worship in the parish for six months or more at any time before the wedding takes place;

  • one of your parents has regularly attended public worship here for six months or more in your lifetime;
  • your parents or grandparents were married here.
